Southern Clocks is delighted to offer for sale this dramatic 'knowledge' themed antique French figural clock. It was made by Bechot of Paris, who is recorded as working between 1819 and 1825, and features a number of beautifully modelled representations of knowledge and learning. The striking youth has a calm and measured expression; almost an attitude of dedicated study. The base reliefs represent the arts and science with the centre relief, a sculptor, flanked by artists’ material and scientific instruments. This clock would be ideal as a study accompaniment.

The case is made from gilded bronze, or ormolu, and is a good example of the craft, with strong and clear sculpting. There is some wear to the gilding, but this only adds to the patina of this clock and gives it the appropriate feeling of age. All the elements of this clock are marked with the movement serial number 3580, including the dial surround, the engine-turned dial centre and the case itself. Everything matches and has been together for 200 years.

The movement is a typically high quality French twin-train with countwheel striking on a small and pleasant-sounding bell at the back of the movement. These movements were very well made and kept good time and this one is no exception. It has been restored, cleaned and serviced in our workshops. The pendulum is suspended on silk with a regulating adjustment at the front of the dial.

The overall height of the clock is just under 38 cm (15 inches). It is 26 cm (10 1/4 inches) wide and measures just 10 cm (4 inches) from front to back. It is available for sale at £3,250.

Southern Clocks is always delighted to set up our clocks and provide assistance in helping new owners live with their clocks.
