The perfect functional antique to set off a stylish wood-themed interior, this very pretty English dial clock is an ideal clock for the kitchen or hallway, but would sit well in a wood-themed study or sitting room. It is constructed in a solid walnut ‘drum’ style case with a balance wheel movement, so would work well in that shepherds hut in the garden too! Made by George Yonge in London in the first half of the 19th Century, probably around 1830, this clock is unusual, not just because of the small size of its dial, being just eight inches (20 cm) in diameter, but because the attractive case is extremely well made from solid walnut. Within the walnut is a thin metal casing protecting the movement from dust. The features show that this was a special clock for a special customer. Its platform escapement and overall quality suggests that it was made to be used in first class accommodation on board an ocean liner or luxury railway service.

Whatever its intended initial use it is a beautifully made clock with a top quality eight day duration ‘going’ train movement with a large balance wheel escapement which can be adjusted for time keeping from the dial. The blued steel hands are original as is the thick cast brass bezel and beveled glass. The original lock is present and working but the end of the bezel clip has been trimmed so does not engage on the lock although it is a good friction fit and does not open on its own. This clock is original and genuine. The painted dial has been restored recently by a specialist dial restorer, although some of the original marks can still be seen.

This clock has been fully serviced and restored in Southern Clocks’ workshops. A full photographic record of the work done is provided as part of the sale and the clock will be set up in the purchaser’s home and maintenance instruction provided as required. This clock is overall 28 cm (11 inches) in diameter and 12 cm (nearly 5 inches) deep and is available for sale at £2,250.
